Which Amsterdam museum should you book first?

Book the Anne Frank House first, exactly when its six-week Tuesday release opens. Book the Van Gogh Museum next if it is essential, then reserve the Rijksmuseum. Fill canal cruises, restaurants and smaller museums around those anchors. The correct order is based on scarcity, not fame.

First: Anne Frank House

The museum releases tickets every Tuesday at 10am CEST for visits six weeks later. Tickets are sold only through the official website for a specific time. There is no official waiting list.

Read the official ticket page and our booking guide. Set the trip calendar around this reservation when it matters.

Second: Van Gogh Museum

Van Gogh tickets use a date and start time and can sell out in busy periods. Book early when the museum is a main reason for traveling. Do not rely on arriving at Museumplein and solving it at the door.

Choose the museum first using Rijksmuseum versus Van Gogh, then buy from the official ticket shop.

Third: Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum requires a start time, including for many pass holders, but its capacity and daily schedule often provide more options. Book the preferred morning after the scarce reservations are fixed.

The official visit page recommends online booking and confirms daily opening. Give the collection two to three hours rather than treating the time slot as an hour-long appointment.

Then book the rest

Reserve a canal cruise when you care about a small boat, sunset or a specific dock. Book popular canal-house museums and one important restaurant after the main museum days are stable. Leave markets, parks, ferries and neighborhood walks open.

A trip with four fixed admissions a day has no room for weather, meals or the city itself.
