Which small boat canal tour should you book in Amsterdam?
If you are adults who want a real conversation, I'd book Those Dam Boat Guys: 10 people on most departures and 12 at most, at least 90 minutes on the water and a skipper who talks with you instead of reciting a script. With children, if you want a smoke-free boat, or between November and March, I'd book Pure Boats instead: 16 guests at most, and boats that are covered and heated in the cold months.
Both leave from the Keizersgracht in the western canal ring, a few doors apart, so either fits a day around the Anne Frank House and the Jordaan. Every price, group size and time below comes from each operator's own booking page, checked on October 24, 2026. Prices and boats change, so confirm on the page before you pay.

The table splits into two kinds of boat. Those Dam Boat Guys and Pure Boats cap the group at 10 to 16, which is what makes it a small-boat tour: you can ask questions and the skipper can answer them. Lovely Cruises, Blue Boat and Flagship use open boats too and cost about half as much, but with up to 30 or 35 on board it is closer to a classic cruise with fresh air.
Who should book Those Dam Boat Guys?
Adults who want the most talk for the money. The FAQ says each tour is an unscripted conversation in English, plans on at least 90 minutes on the water, and lets you bring your own food and drinks or buy beer and wine at the office at Prinsenstraat 13 before you board.
The catch is the tone. The public tour page warns of adult topics and adult language, and the FAQ says smoking is allowed on every public tour; the only way to guarantee a smoke-free boat is a private one. Public bookings are capped at six people, so a group of seven or more needs a private boat, which the private tour page lists at €280 for 90 minutes for up to 8 people.
Who should book Pure Boats?
Families, anyone who wants a quieter boat, and anyone going in winter. The 1 Hour Canal Cruise runs about 75 minutes with a captain who guides in English, a drink of your choice from the bar, and a cap of 16 guests. Children under 14 are €25.
It costs more than Those Dam Boat Guys for a shorter cruise. What you get for that is a calmer boat and, in the colder months, one that is (partly) covered and heated, which its FAQ says applies to all its boats. Pure Boats says on its homepage that it is often fully booked, so I would not leave it to the morning of.
Open boat or covered boat between late October and March?
From late October to March, I'd book a boat that is covered and heated, not one that only offers blankets. On an open boat in cold rain you spend the hour under a poncho looking at the floor.
Pure Boats runs a Winter Canal Cruise from November 1, 2026 to March 1, 2027: 75 minutes, from €42.50, up to 6 from one group, on boats it describes as covered and heated. Those Dam Boat Guys covers its boats in the colder months and when the forecast looks bad, with blankets and umbrellas on board, but the FAQ says the windows stay open when it is not raining. Dress for the water either way.
Lovely Cruises' open boats have a tarp roof for moderate rain, and in severe weather Lovely rebooks you or moves you to a covered boat. Flagship switches to a saloon boat with a fixed roof when heavier rain is expected. Blue Boat's Blue Sky Boat is not covered at all, so I would only book it on a dry day.
Morning or sunset?
For a small boat, I'd take the morning. The water is quieter before the day's cruise traffic builds, and it leaves the afternoon free for a museum. Pure Boats' Morning Canal Cruise boards at 9:15 AM in summer for 75 minutes at €39, with one drink.
Sunset is the better choice when the cruise is the evening itself, with a drink in hand. Sunset in Amsterdam moves by more than three hours across the year, so pick the departure from your actual date, not a generic "sunset cruise" label. In winter it comes in the late afternoon, which means a sunset boat fits between a museum and dinner rather than after it.
How far ahead should you book a small boat tour?
Book as soon as your dates are fixed for April to September and for Amsterdam Light Festival evenings; a few days ahead is my rule for weekdays from November to March, outside the festival. None of the operators publishes a lead time, so this is my call, not a guarantee of a seat.
The reason is arithmetic. A boat of 10 to 16 has few seats, and a single group of six can take more than a third of a Pure Boats sailing. Evenings and weekends go first. Light Festival cruises run at Pure Boats from November 26, 2026 to January 17, 2027, according to its homepage, and those evenings are when I would book earliest in winter.
The larger open boats are easier to book late. If the small boat you want is gone, I'd take Lovely Cruises from the Anne Frank House or Flagship from the same corner before booking a big glass-roofed cruise.
Where does the canal tour fit in an Amsterdam trip?
I'd put it on the day you walk the western canal ring, since Those Dam Boat Guys and Pure Boats both board on the Keizersgracht. The Amsterdam guide has the rest of the city, and the four-day itinerary places the cruise after a walking day, once you recognize the neighborhoods.
If you have a morning to spare, the Zaanse Schans day trip covers the windmills, and it works best on a different day from the boat so neither is rushed.
