What is the best four-day Amsterdam itinerary?

Use one day for the canal belt and Jordaan, one for a major art museum and De Pijp, one for the Anne Frank House and western canals, then choose a fourth city day or Zaanse Schans. Book the Anne Frank House first. Its six-week release is the constraint that should shape the trip.

Day one: canal belt, old center and the water

Walk from Centraal through the western canal belt without trying to cover every landmark. Have lunch near the route, then take a canal cruise in late afternoon when the street plan already makes sense.

Choose the boat with the canal cruise guide. Keep the evening close to the hotel.

Day two: Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh, then De Pijp

Reserve one Museumplein museum in the morning. Give it two to three hours, have lunch, then continue into De Pijp for Albert Cuypmarkt, shops, Sarphatipark and dinner.

Use Rijksmuseum versus Van Gogh Museum. Visiting both back to back is an art endurance test, not an efficient day.

Day three: Anne Frank House and Jordaan

Build the day around the Anne Frank House time. Before or afterward, walk Westerkerk, the Jordaan lanes and Noordermarkt when it is active. Leave emotional space after the museum instead of running directly to another major attraction.

The ticket guide explains the Tuesday release and invalid reseller problem.

Day four: Zaanse Schans or more Amsterdam

Choose Zaanse Schans for windmills, industrial history and a half-day outside the city. Stay in Amsterdam for canal-house museums, Noord, Oost or a longer neighborhood day.

If the first three days already felt compressed, remain in Amsterdam. A fourth day should add range, not create another early departure.

Book in the order that can break the trip

  1. Anne Frank House
  2. Van Gogh Museum if it is your choice
  3. Rijksmuseum time
  4. Canal cruise at a preferred time
  5. One dinner that matters

The museum booking order gives the release logic. Neighborhoods and ordinary meals need no reservation plan.
