How would I get from Barcelona airport to the city center?
Landing after 23:38, take the Aerobús to Plaça Catalunya: the train has stopped, and the metro closes at midnight Sunday to Thursday, but the bus runs all night. Take a taxi instead when you land after midnight with heavy bags or a hotel deep in the Gothic Quarter or Barceloneta. In the day, the same bus covers most first stays from either terminal: 7.75 euros one way and 13.30 euros return, with stops at Plaça Espanya, Gran Via - Borrell, Plaça Universitat and Plaça Catalunya. Land at Terminal 2 for a hotel in Eixample and the R2 Nord train runs direct to Passeig de Gràcia. For Sagrada Familia, change there to metro L2.

The train times come from the Renfe timetable for Monday, October 26, 2026; check the date you travel, because works change Rodalies service. A city single ticket or T-casual does not open the airport metro gates, so on the L9 you need the airport ticket or a Hola Barcelona card.
Does it matter whether you land at T1 or T2?
Yes. Terminal 1 has the busiest Aerobús line and the metro, but no train. The A1 runs every 5 minutes through the day, so at T1 I would walk straight to the bus. Terminal 2 has the R2 Nord station on floor 0, the metro and the A2, which starts and ends at T2B and T2C and runs every 10 minutes by day.
I would not ride the shuttle from T1 to T2 just to catch the train. Aena runs a free 24-hour shuttle between terminals, but the extra transfer and a train every 30 minutes cancel out the gain. On the way home, the A1 and A2 go to different terminals, so check your departure terminal with the airline before you board.
What if you land late at night?
After 23:38 the train has stopped, and the metro stops at midnight Sunday to Thursday. The Aerobús keeps going: the A1 runs every 10 minutes until 01:05, then every 20, and the A2 every 20 minutes from 23:00. If your hotel is a short, well-lit walk from Plaça Catalunya or Plaça Universitat, the night bus is fine.
For anything deeper in the old town or with more than one large bag, I'd take a taxi. From 20:00 to 08:00 and on weekends the meter uses the higher T-2 rate of 1.66 euros per kilometre, plus the 4.60 euro airport supplement. Use only the black and yellow taxis at the official rank. When is the airport metro worth it?
Rarely for a first arrival. The L9 Sud serves both terminals every 7 minutes, but it does not reach the center on its own: you change at Zona Universitària for L3, Torrassa for L1 or Collblanc for L5. With bags, that change is the part to avoid. It makes sense when your hotel is on one of those lines near the change, or when you already hold a Hola Barcelona card, which covers the airport stations.
Do not buy a T-casual for this ride. TMB lists it as not valid at the airport stations, and with the wrong ticket you buy an airport ticket at 5.90 euros before you can leave.
When is a taxi the better choice?
When the walk from the stop is the hard part. With children, several suitcases or a hotel inside the Gothic Quarter or Barceloneta, a taxi to the door saves more effort than any timetable. Aena places the official ranks opposite arrivals at T1 and at T2A, T2B and T2C. Expect the 21 euro minimum from the airport, which already includes the supplements, and a 4.60 euro extra for a vehicle carrying five to eight passengers.
Give the driver the written street address, not the hotel name. Many old-town lanes are closed to cars, so ask the hotel before you fly where a car can stop for its entrance.
What should you save before the flight?
- Your arrival terminal and the hotel street address.
- The Aerobús stop or train station nearest the hotel, and the walk from it.
- The train or bus times for your date from the operator, plus the taxi rank as the fallback.
Keep the arrival afternoon for a meal near the hotel and one nearby neighborhood. The three-day itinerary starts properly the next morning.
