3 Days in Venice: San Marco, Dorsoduro and the Lagoon Islands

Spend day one around San Marco and Castello, day two in Dorsoduro and Santa Croce, and day three in the northern lagoon. The third day is what makes this itinerary different from a short Venice stay: Murano, Mazzorbo and Burano have enough time to become places, not a rushed package tour.

This is three full days and four nights, with arrival before day one. If your third day ends with an afternoon flight or train, keep it in Venice. The island route works because lunch and the return boat are allowed to set the pace.

• Choose one or two San Marco interiors. St. Mark's Basilica and Doge's Palace are separate visits. See both if history is the point. Choose one if you want more of Castello.
• Keep the Guggenheim off Tuesday. It closes Tuesdays. The Lace Museum on Burano closes Mondays, so place the island day elsewhere if lace matters to you.
• Use public boats for the lagoon. ACTV line 12 connects Fondamente Nove with Murano Faro, Mazzorbo and Burano. A private tour is useful for special-access glass studios, but it is not required for this route.

Start with coffee and a pastry at Rosa Salva's San Marco branch, then enter St. Mark's Basilica. Use the official ticket site to choose the basilica, Pala d'Oro, museum and bell tower separately. You do not need every add-on to understand the building.

Book Al Covo in Castello for lunch. Its current menu includes bigoli in salsa, daily fish and Diane's chocolate cake. Lunch service is short and the restaurant closes Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so let its schedule determine whether this meal belongs on day one or a later evening.

Return to Doge's Palace after lunch if you want the political story of Venice after the basilica. Otherwise continue farther into Castello. Via Garibaldi and the streets around the Arsenale become calmer than the square and give the afternoon a different mood.

Begin at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection when it opens at 10am. After the gold and ceremony of San Marco, Peggy Guggenheim's house and twentieth-century collection reset the trip. Give it two hours, then choose lunch by the afternoon you want.

Cantine del Vino già Schiavi, on Fondamenta Nani, is for cicchetti and a glass of wine close to the museum. Take several small bites from the counter. La Zucca in Santa Croce is the seated alternative, with vegetable-led dishes such as pumpkin flan and seasonal lasagne. It also serves meat and closes Sundays.

If you eat at Schiavi, stay in Dorsoduro and walk the Zattere. If you eat at La Zucca, continue around Campo San Giacomo dell'Orio and toward Rialto. Let lunch choose the side of the city rather than crossing Venice twice for a checklist.

Take ACTV line 12 from Fondamente Nove to Murano Faro. Check the live timetable that morning because service notices can change the published pattern. A 24-hour ACTV pass currently costs €25 and the standard waterborne ticket costs €9.50, so compare the pass with the number of boats you will actually take.

Walk to the Murano Glass Museum. The collection runs from archaeological glass through Renaissance pieces to twentieth-century design. That context is more useful than beginning with a sales demonstration and trying to decide whether the work in front of you is exceptional.

The museum currently opens daily at 10am. From April through October it closes at 6pm, with later Friday and Saturday hours through September 26 in 2026. Give it about 90 minutes, then walk back toward Murano Faro for line 12 to Mazzorbo.

Book Venissa Osteria on Mazzorbo for lunch. The estate sits inside a walled vineyard planted with the lagoon's Dorona grape. The Osteria is the more relaxed choice; the fine-dining restaurant makes lunch the main event and closes Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

From April through October the Osteria currently opens daily, with lunch from noon to 2pm. This is the useful reservation for the island day because it gives the route a destination beyond colorful houses. If you want the tasting restaurant, book it first and plan the boats around that seating.

Walk across the wooden bridge from Mazzorbo to Burano after lunch. The Lace Museum explains the island's craft tradition and keeps the visit from being only a backdrop for photographs. It opens from 10am to 4pm, closes Mondays, and has slightly later Friday and Saturday hours during part of summer 2026.

Return from Burano on line 12. Skip Torcello on this version unless you left Murano early or did not reserve lunch. Adding every island makes the boat timetable the main thing you remember.

Pensione Accademia in Dorsoduro is the romantic, traditional choice. Antique furniture, Murano chandeliers and two gardens give it a sense of place, and breakfast outside works beautifully when the weather cooperates. Day two is close to home; day three begins with a longer walk or vaporetto to Fondamente Nove.
