7 Days in Sicily: An Eastern Route Through Catania, Etna and Ortigia

A seven-day eastern Sicily itinerary with three bases, Mount Etna, Taormina, Ortigia, Noto, food stops and a realistic driving plan.

The short answer

In one week, choose eastern or western Sicily. This route uses two nights in Catania, two near Taormina and three in Ortigia. It gives Mount Etna, the Greek Theatre, Syracuse and Noto enough time without pretending you can also absorb Palermo and Agrigento.

The official Visit Sicily seven-day route crosses the island. We prefer a tighter eastern loop for a first week because it removes the long Palermo transfer and creates slower evenings.

The route at a glance

  • Nights one and two: Catania for markets, baroque streets and an Etna day.
  • Nights three and four: Taormina or nearby Giardini Naxos for the theatre, coast and a slower day.
  • Nights five to seven: Ortigia for Syracuse, swimming and a Noto excursion.

Fly into and out of Catania when possible. Pick up the car after the first city day and return it before the final airport transfer if parking becomes more trouble than value.

Days one and two: Catania and Etna

Spend arrival day around Piazza del Duomo, the fish market and Via Crociferi. Eat pasta alla Norma, grilled fish and a granita with brioche. For a modern dinner, Me Cumpari Turiddu puts Sicilian ingredients into a more considered room; for something casual, follow the market streets and choose by what is cooking.

Use day two for Mount Etna. Conditions change quickly, and access depends on weather and volcanic activity. Book a licensed guide if you want to go beyond the visitor areas, and check current notices from Etna Park. Pair the mountain with one winery on the north or east slope rather than racing through several tastings.

Days three and four: Taormina and the coast

Drive to Taormina after breakfast. See the Ancient Theatre early or late, then walk Corso Umberto once the day crowds thin. Lunch at Tischi Toschi for Sicilian cooking in a small room, or take a simple granita and sandwich if the weather belongs to the sea.

Use the second day for Isola Bella, a boat outing or a slow morning in town. Giardini Naxos is less polished but easier for the beach and often better value. Castelmola has the view but adds another climb and parking problem. Choose the excursion that solves the day you want.

Days five to seven: Ortigia and Noto

Move south to Ortigia and return the car to a legal lot outside the restricted center. Walk the cathedral square at dusk, browse the market in the morning and see the archaeological park on the mainland when the temperature is kind.

Give one day to Noto. Go for the honey-colored baroque streets, Caffè Sicilia and a long lunch, then choose a beach or nature reserve if the season suits. Do not stack Noto, Modica and Ragusa into one day. The final day stays in Ortigia for swimming, the castle edge, the Jewish baths or simply another meal by the water.

What to eat

In Catania, look for pasta alla Norma, horse meat if it appeals, and breakfast granita. Around Etna, order mushrooms, pistachio, local cheeses and the wines of the volcanic slopes. In Ortigia, eat seafood, caponata and almond sweets. In Noto, the reason to stop at Caffè Sicilia is the precision of the granita and pastries, not an Instagram obligation.

Restaurants close on different days and beach-season schedules shift. Confirm each important meal directly, and keep one night free for the place recommended by your host.

Driving and hotels

Use the car for Etna, the base changes and Noto. Do not drive inside historic centers without understanding the ZTL. A compact car is easier for parking and village roads.

In Catania, Asmundo di Gisira is for bold art and a central address. Near Taormina, Hotel Villa Schuler has gardens and a calmer feel close to town; choose Giardini Naxos if parking and beach access matter more. In Ortigia, Gutkowski is understated and directly on the water, while Seven Rooms Villadorata is for baroque atmosphere and a small number of polished rooms.
