It gives Mount Etna, the Greek Theatre, Syracuse and Noto enough time without pretending you can also absorb Palermo and Agrigento.\nThe official Visit Sicily seven-day route crosses the island. I prefer a tighter eastern loop for a first week because it removes the long Palermo transfer and creates slower evenings."

      "heading": "What is the best seven-day route in eastern Sicily?",
      "text": "• Nights one and two: Catania for markets, baroque streets and an Etna day.\n• Nights three and four: Taormina or nearby Giardini Naxos for the theatre, coast and a slower day.\n• Nights five to seven: Ortigia for Syracuse, swimming and a Noto excursion.\nFly into and out of Catania when possible. Pick up the car after the first city day and return it before the final airport transfer if parking becomes more trouble than value.\nBase | Nights | What it gives you\nCatania | 2 | A city evening, the fish market and the cleanest Etna day\nTaormina or Giardini Naxos | 2 | The Greek Theatre, coast and a hotel day\nOrtigia | 3 | Syracuse, Noto and two evenings without driving\nThe official eastern Sicily route covers a much larger sweep. In one week, stopping at Ortigia is the useful restraint. Save Ragusa, Modica and the west for another trip."

      "heading": "Day one: settle into Catania",
      "text": "Stay near the center for your first two nights. Walk from Piazza del Duomo through the fish-market streets and Via Crociferi. The market is for a morning return if you arrive late; do not make the first evening a race to catch it. For dinner, order pasta alla Norma or grilled fish. Me Cumpari Turiddu is a more considered Sicilian room; a simple trattoria around the center may suit an arrival night better.\nDo not pick up a rental car for the first city evening unless your hotel has confirmed parking. Catania is easier on foot, and the car begins to earn its place on Etna day."

    {
      "id": "section-4",
      "heading": "What if Etna weather is poor?",
      "text": "Make Etna the main event. Choose an accessible visitor-area outing or a licensed guide for a more demanding route, then check the Etna Park notices and the weather close to departure. Volcanic conditions and visibility can change the day. A single winery on the return is enough; several tastings turn the mountain into a transfer.\nIf conditions are poor, keep Catania as the day: market in the morning, baroque streets and a long lunch. Move Etna to the following morning only if you can still reach Taormina comfortably afterward. The route needs a fallback, not a promise of clear summit views."

      "heading": "Day three: Catania to Taormina",
      "text": "Move to Taormina or Giardini Naxos after breakfast. If you drive, confirm parking with the hotel before entering the historic center. See the Ancient Theatre early or late rather than at the hottest, busiest hour. Walk Corso Umberto in the evening when day visitors thin out.\nTischi Toschi is the small-room Sicilian lunch if a table fits your timing. Otherwise keep lunch simple and let the theatre and town set the day. Taormina is expensive; Giardini Naxos is plainer but easier for beach access and often for parking."

    {
      "id": "section-6",
      "heading": "Day four: the coast or a slower Taormina",
      "text": "Choose Isola Bella and swimming if the weather is good, or a boat outing if being on the water is the point. A second option is a quiet morning in town and a long lunch before the day crowds arrive. Castelmola gives a high view but adds another climb and parking question; it is not an automatic add-on.\nThis is the day to enjoy the hotel you paid for. A terrace, garden or beach access matters more here than squeezing another archaeological site into the route."

    {
      "id": "section-7",
      "heading": "Day five: south to Ortigia",
      "text": "Drive south and plan to leave the car in a legal lot outside Ortigia’s restricted streets. Walk into the island with a small bag if the hotel is not car-accessible. Stay three nights so the move pays off. See the cathedral square at dusk, then eat seafood, caponata or whatever is best at the table you have chosen.\nOrtigia is the base for Syracuse and Noto, not just a photogenic stop between them. Its market, waterfront and evening streets deserve time without a car key in your hand."
    },
    {
      "id": "section-8",
      "heading": "How should you divide Syracuse and Ortigia?",
      "text": "Visit the Neapolis archaeological area on the Syracuse mainland in the cooler part of the day. The current full ticket is €14. Hours change through the year, and the ticket office closes before the site, so use the official page for your date.\nReturn to Ortigia for lunch and the afternoon. The island market is strongest in the morning, so put it before Neapolis if food shopping matters more than avoiding the heat. Choose one church, gallery or historic interior later. The value of three Ortigia nights is being able to come back to a street, swim or restaurant you liked."

      "id": "section-9",
      "heading": "Day seven: Noto, then back to Ortigia",
      "text": "Give Noto its own excursion. Walk the baroque center, stop at Caffè Sicilia for granita or pastry, and have a long lunch. If it is beach season, choose one coastal stop on the return. Do not stack Noto, Modica and Ragusa into the same day just because the road map makes it look possible.\nReturn to Ortigia for the final evening. If Noto is not your interest, keep the day for swimming, the castle edge or another Syracuse museum. The route is strongest when the last day is a choice, not a compulsory distance."

      "text": "In Catania, look for pasta alla Norma, horse meat if it appeals, and breakfast granita. Around Etna, order mushrooms, pistachio, local cheeses and the wines of the volcanic slopes. In Ortigia, eat seafood, caponata and almond sweets. In Noto, the reason to stop at Caffè Sicilia is the precision of the granita and pastries, not an Instagram obligation.\nRestaurants close on different days and beach-season schedules shift. Confirm each important meal directly, and keep one night free for the place recommended by your host."

      "heading": "Do you need a car for the whole week?",
      "text": "Use the car for Etna, the base changes and Noto. Leave it parked for the city days. A compact car is easier on village roads and in legal lots outside the historic centers. Do not enter a ZTL because the hotel pin appears inside it. Ask the hotel for the exact arrival route and whether it can register a plate.\nBase | Hotel personality | Why it fits\nCatania | Asmundo di Gisira for bold contemporary art | A central address for the market and first city day\nTaormina | Hotel Villa Schuler for gardens and a calmer old-town stay | You can walk into town and leave the car arranged with the hotel\nOrtigia | Hotel Gutkowski for an understated waterfront base | The evenings, market and water are outside the door\nChoose Giardini Naxos instead of Taormina when straightforward beach access and parking matter more than walking Corso Umberto at night. In Ortigia, pay for the location only if you will use the island after day visitors leave.\nIf Sicily is one part of a longer first trip, compare the pacing in the 10-day Italy itinerary and 14-day Italy itinerary. Both make the trade between a focused region and a faster multi-city route explicit."
