Is late November a good time to visit Kyoto?
Yes. Late November is when the maples peak in central Kyoto, and it is worth the crowds if you plan for them: one famous temple at opening each morning, quieter gardens after lunch and one night opening. It is also the busiest stretch of Kyoto's year, so book the hotel first and everything else around it.
Kyoto City gives mid to late November as the usual peak for Eikando, Nanzen-ji, Tofuku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera, Kodai-ji, Tenryu-ji and the rest of the city center. JNTO calls the end of November particularly busy.
If you can choose, I'd come between November 17 and 27, Monday to Friday, and keep away from November 21 to 23, 2026, a three-day weekend in Japan that ends on Labor Thanksgiving Day.
When do the autumn leaves peak in Kyoto in 2026?
The first 2026 forecast puts Arashiyama's peak from about November 13, the same as last year. tenki.jp (Japan Weather Association, published October 14, 2026) expects western Japan to color on time or late because November should be warmer than usual.
| Area | Usual peak | In late November |
|---|---|---|
| Takao (Jingo-ji, Saimyo-ji), Enryaku-ji | Early to mid November | Often past its best; go in early November instead |
| Kurama | Mid November | Toward the end of its peak |
| City center: Eikando, Nanzen-ji, Tofuku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera, Kodai-ji, Arashiyama | Mid to late November | At peak |
| Ohara (Sanzen-in, Jakko-in) | Early or mid November to early December | At peak |
| Ruriko-in; Shimogamo Shrine | Late November to early December; early December | Just coming in |
Kyoto City starts its live color report for 2026 on October 30 and updates it by temple. I'd check it on the Kyoto City leaf page a week before you go and move the day trips, not the hotel, if a year runs late.
Which places are worth it in late November?
| Place | Why | Autumn hours and price |
|---|---|---|
| Tofuku-ji | The Tsutenkyo bridge over a valley of maples | Tsutenkyo from 8:30am, November 14 to December 6; ¥1,000 in autumn |
| Eikando | The pond garden, by day and lit at night | Day 9am to 4pm, ¥1,500 (November 11 to December 6). Night 5:30 to 8:30pm, ¥1,000 (November 20 to December 6) |
| Kiyomizu-dera | The stage above the maples, open from 6am | From 6am. Night opening to 9:30pm, November 21 to 30 |
| Kodai-ji | The garden, pond and bamboo, lit until late | Lights from 5pm, last entry 9:30pm, October 23 to December 13; ¥800 covers day and night |
| Tenryu-ji | Sogenchi garden before Arashiyama fills | Garden from 7:30am, November 14 to 30; ¥500 |
| Nanzen-ji | The Sanmon gate and the aqueduct, with the grounds free | 8:40am to 5pm until November 30; Hojo garden and Sanmon ¥600 each |
| Kitano Tenmangu Momiji-en | A maple garden along the old city earthworks | Light-up from sunset to 8pm, November 13 to December 6; ¥1,500 with tea and a sweet |
If you only have one morning, give it to Tofuku-ji at 8:30am. It has the most maples in one view, and it closes at 4:30pm with no night opening, so the morning is the only time to beat the crowd. The temple may ask you not to stop for photographs on the Tsutenkyo and Gaun bridges, and tripods are not allowed.
How do you avoid the crowds?
- Be at one famous temple when it opens. Kiyomizu-dera at 6am, Tenryu-ji's garden at 7:30am or Tofuku-ji at 8:30am. By mid-morning each one is full.
- Check the hourly forecast. Kyoto City's Sightseeing Comfort Map rates crowding at major spots on a five-level scale, hour by hour from 6am to 11pm. Use it to choose between two places, not to find an empty one.
- Take trains, not buses. The Keihan line reaches Tofuku-ji and Gion, and JR runs to Arashiyama. City buses stall in autumn traffic, and the bus-only day pass has ended; the subway and bus one-day pass costs ¥1,100. Kyoto City Bureau of Transportation
- Use the night openings for the second famous place of the day. Kodai-ji's ticket covers day and night with no timed entry. Eikando sells night tickets only on the day, and the temple warns it may stop admission early when the late-November crowd is too large, so arrive at 5:30pm.
- Put Arashiyama on a weekday morning, then leave by early afternoon, when the day trippers arrive.
What should you book ahead?
Book the hotel before anything else, then the temples that take reservations. I'd book as soon as the dates are fixed, with free cancellation, and look at the restaurants and reservations after that.
- Enko-ji takes timed reservations only from November 10 to December 10, 2026. Booking opened on October 20; admission is ¥1,500. Enko-ji
- Ruriko-in requires an advance reservation from November 13 to December 6, 2026. Kyoto City
- Sento Imperial Palace is free, but booked online from 5am Japan time on the first day of the month three months ahead, until three days before. About 50 same-day places are handed out from 8:40am. For late November that online window opened on August 1, so now it is a same-day place or a cancellation. Imperial Household Agency
- Dinner. Book kaiseki and any restaurant you have in mind for every night of a late-November stay. I would not leave dinner to the day.
Budget for Kyoto's accommodation tax, which rose on March 1, 2026. It is charged per person per night by room rate: ¥1,000 from ¥20,000, ¥4,000 from ¥50,000 and ¥10,000 at ¥100,000 or more. Kyoto City accommodation tax
How would I fit late November into a Kyoto itinerary?
Keep the three-day Kyoto itinerary in its order and move each day's start earlier:
- Day one, eastern Kyoto: Kiyomizu-dera at 6am, before the lanes and Gion the plan already has. Come back to Kodai-ji after dark.
- Day two, Fushimi Inari: Tofuku-ji first, at 8:30am, then one stop south on the JR Nara line to Inari for the shrine walk, a later brunch and the rest of the day as planned.
- Day three, Arashiyama: Tenryu-ji's garden at 7:30am, the bamboo and the river before the plan's temple lunch.
Use the evening of day two or three for Eikando. With two days, keep the two-day plan and add Tofuku-ji at 8:30am before everything else. With four, follow the four-day plan and replace its day four, Kinkaku-ji and a northern temple, with Ohara, where Sanzen-in and Jakko-in keep their color into early December. Kinkaku-ji's gold is the same in any month; Ohara's maples are not.
If Kyoto hotels are full or the prices are not worth it, the Kyoto or Osaka base guide says when Osaka works instead. The Kyoto where to stay guide picks the area, and a week across both cities is in the Kyoto and Osaka itinerary.
