3 Days in Florence: Renaissance Art, Tuscan Lunches and the Oltrarno

Give the cathedral area your first morning, the Uffizi your second and Sant'Ambrogio your third. Cross the river for an Oltrarno afternoon, leave room for shopping, and book one lunch you are happy to spend two hours over.

This is three full days in Florence, with arrival beforehand. If your train arrives at lunchtime on day one, start with the cathedral square from outside and move the museum visit to day three. That gives you two full days and an arrival afternoon without pretending the train journey counts as sightseeing.

The route suits a first visit with an interest in art and food. It does not include a Tuscany day trip. With only three days, Siena or a vineyard visit takes away one of the Florence days below. Our Rome and Florence week shows how the city fits into a longer trip.

• Choose the cathedral museum or the dome climb. The museum is the choice for sculpture and the original Baptistery doors. The dome is the choice for architecture and the climb itself: 463 steps with no lift. You can do both, but give the complex more of the day.
• Put the Uffizi on an open day. It normally closes Mondays. Move the whole Uffizi day, including lunch, rather than inserting it after another museum.
• If David is essential, reserve the Accademia instead of the market morning. This plan gives that morning to food and craft. The alternative below makes the tradeoff explicit.

Breakfast and the square

Have breakfast at your hotel, then walk to Piazza del Duomo. Hotel Pendini's breakfast, for guests, starts at 7:30am and includes eggs, pastries and coffee served at the table. If you are staying across the river, Ditta Artigianale on Via dello Sprone 5R is a specialty-coffee stop before you cross into the center.

Morning: choose your cathedral visit

Use the cathedral authority's planning page to choose the pass that includes what you actually want. For this route, start with the Opera del Duomo Museum. The original bronze doors from the Baptistery are preserved there. Seeing them in the museum is a different visit from looking at the building across the square.

Choose the dome climb instead if you want to see how the structure works from within and climb to the lantern. It requires a time slot; there is no lift. Leave the bell tower for another trip unless climbing is the thing you most want to do here.

Allow roughly two hours for your chosen visit, with additional time if you book more than one part of the complex.

Lunch: wine and something to share

Walk south through Piazza della Signoria, cross Ponte Vecchio and continue to Enoteca Pitti Gola e Cantina, Piazza Pitti 16. Allow about half an hour from the cathedral area with stops on the way.

Choose it for a wine-led lunch. Order local cheese and charcuterie to share, ask the team to suggest wines, or choose a tasting menu if you want the meal to be a substantial part of the afternoon. Lunch runs noon to 3pm. Reserve after settling the morning's museum time.

Afternoon: Santo Spirito

Continue to Piazza Santo Spirito and spend the afternoon on this side of the river. Browse rather than making another museum appointment. If you started with a long lunch, a short walk and coffee are enough.

Ditta Artigianale's Sprone café fits here too if you skipped it earlier. Keep dinner in the Oltrarno if this is where you are staying; if Pitti Gola is your dinner choice, move the wine lunch here and eat more lightly at midday.

Coffee before the museum

Ditta Artigianale on Via dei Neri 32R is near the Uffizi approach. Choose it if you care about the coffee and want to ask about the beans. The Sprone branch from yesterday is across the river, so use the Neri address for this morning.

Morning: paintings at the Uffizi

Book through the Uffizi and give the collection three hours or more if painting is the reason you came to Florence. Choose several works you want to spend time with rather than trying to give every room equal attention.

Botticelli's Birth of Venus is worth looking at before reading its label. Follow the wind from the figures on the left toward the cloak on the right. The scene is Venus reaching shore, despite the title. That movement gives you something to look for beyond recognizing a famous picture.

Lunch: Cibrèo Trattoria

Cibrèo Trattoria, Via de' Macci 122r, is about a twenty-minute walk east from the museum. Go for Tuscan food beyond steak: pappa al pomodoro, chicken-liver pâté with crostini, or chicken-and-ricotta meatballs. The menu also lists cheesecake with bitter-orange marmalade. Lunch runs 12:30–2:30pm, so this works with an early museum start.

If you want a longer Uffizi visit, move Cibrèo to tomorrow. That is a better choice than spending the final galleries watching the clock.

Afternoon: leather and Santa Croce

Scuola del Cuoio is the shopping stop for leather bags, wallets and small accessories in the Santa Croce area. If watching the craft matters more than browsing the shop, choose a weekday: the school's published artisan working hours are Monday to Friday, 10am to 6:30pm. A shop visit and a booked workshop are different activities.

Spend the rest of the afternoon around Santa Croce. You have already had the day's major art visit; there is no need to buy another museum ticket to justify staying in the neighborhood.

Option one: Sant'Ambrogio

Cibrèo Caffè, Via del Verrocchio 5r, opens at 8am Monday to Saturday. Start here for breakfast in the neighborhood, then visit Sant'Ambrogio market. Choose a trading morning rather than leaving the market for late afternoon; individual sellers have their own schedules.

Use the visit to see what is being sold and decide what appeals. This morning is for food browsing, not a second large attraction. If yesterday's Uffizi ran long, have your Cibrèo Trattoria lunch today. Otherwise, keep lunch lighter and save the wine meal at Pitti Gola for tonight.

Option two: the Accademia

Book the Galleria dell'Accademia if seeing Michelangelo's original David matters more than the market. Give the museum the morning, including time for the other sculpture and the musical instruments collection. Use its current visitor calendar when choosing the date.

Afterwards, walk toward Sant'Ambrogio for lunch, allowing around twenty minutes. This replaces the market morning; it does not need to be another booking before the same breakfast plan.

Afternoon and last dinner

Return to the area you enjoyed most. For more shopping, use Santa Croce or the Oltrarno. For a slower finish, return to the hotel before dinner.

Cibrèo Caffè is also an evening option Monday to Saturday. Its menu includes a house Negroni and alcohol-free drinks. Pitti Gola lists dinner from 7pm to 10:30pm and suits a last meal where choosing wine is part of the pleasure.

Hotel Pendini is best for someone who wants to walk straight into central Florence. It sits by Piazza della Repubblica, between the station side of the center and the Uffizi. Its breakfast, served from 7:30–10am, makes early museum mornings easier. Choose it for the location and traditional hotel atmosphere.

AdAstra is best for couples who want time at the hotel to be part of the trip. Its individually decorated rooms, roll-top baths and terrace overlooking a private garden make a slower afternoon appealing. It is in the Oltrarno, so you cross the river for the Uffizi and cathedral. Some rooms face the street: choose the category if the garden view is important. A view does not mean unrestricted access to the private garden.

For Florence Peretola airport, tram T2 runs from the station area toward Peretola Aeroporto. Check GEST's luggage rules if you have a large suitcase: the tram has size limits, not just an extra-bag charge. From an Oltrarno hotel, compare a direct taxi with getting to the tram first. Pisa airport is a different journey.
