The high-level plan
Choose this route if ancient history and Renaissance art are the reason you want to visit Italy. Rome gets two full days: one for the Colosseum and Forum, another for the Vatican Museums. Florence gets two full days, with the Uffizi as its main museum visit. Afternoons leave room for neighborhoods, meals and a break at the hotel.
Three nights in each city gives you four full sightseeing days and one train journey. Choose this for art and city life. For beaches or a countryside stay, you’ll want a different week.
Key decisions
- Fly into Rome and out of Florence if the fares work. A return flight from Rome means another train journey and may mean spending your final night there.
- Book the museums around their closing days. The Vatican Museums normally close Sundays, with limited last-Sunday openings; the Uffizi closes Mondays. Swap the full days within each city. Vatican calendar · Uffizi calendar.
- Choose your Colosseum ticket by the access you want. The standard 24-hour ticket includes the Forum and Palatine, but not the arena floor. Colosseum time-slot sales open 30 days ahead. Official ticket choices.
Sample step-by-step itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Rome
Arrival: From Fiumicino into Rome. The Leonardo express takes 32 minutes from FCO to Roma Termini and costs €14 for an adult single. It is useful for the Via Nazionale hotel below. If you’re staying deeper in the historic center, compare a direct taxi with the train plus a second journey. This train does not serve Ciampino.
Afternoon and evening: A first walk, then dinner. If you’re staying at Artemide, walk down toward Monti and Piazza della Madonna dei Monti. Have dinner in the neighborhood, or book Ambrosia on the hotel rooftop if you’d prefer to stay close. Save the Colosseum for tomorrow. Sleep in Rome, night one.
Day 2: Colosseum, Forum and Monti
09:00–13:00: Give the archaeological area the morning. Enter the Colosseum at your booked time, then continue to the Forum and Palatine according to your ticket conditions. Look at the seating tiers inside the Colosseum, then spend the rest of the morning among the Forum’s streets and temples. In hot weather, start early and shorten the exposed Palatine walk.
13:00–15:00: La Taverna dei Fori Imperiali. At Via della Madonna dei Monti 9, this puts lunch in Monti after the ruins. Go for Roman pasta: gricia, carbonara or cacio e pepe are on the restaurant’s menu. Book the lunch service for your actual date, then leave the afternoon free for Monti’s small streets and shops.
Late afternoon: Monti, if you have the energy. Spend time around the neighborhood rather than adding another admission ticket. If the morning was hot or tiring, this is the block to cut.
Evening: Leave room for dinner and an optional drink. For cocktails, compare Drink Kong at Piazza di San Martino ai Monti 8. Its official listing says it opens from 18:30 and admits adults aged 18 and over. Select the Monti location when booking; the site also lists Campo Marzio. Sleep in Rome, night two.
Day 3: Vatican Museums, pizza and a Roman dinner
09:00–13:00: Vatican Museums. Use the official map and choose a route that includes the Raphael Rooms and Sistine Chapel if they are your priorities and open. In Raphael's School of Athens, find Plato and Aristotle in the center: Plato points upward; Aristotle carries his Ethics. Spend a moment with their gestures before looking at the surrounding figures. The Vatican's collection entry provides the context. School of Athens.
13:30: Pizza at Pizzarium. From the museum exit, head toward Via della Meloria 43. Bonci's original Pizzarium serves pizza by the slice with changing toppings. The venue lists continuous daytime service Monday–Saturday and a break after 15:00 on Sunday. Choose a couple of smaller pieces with different toppings. This is a counter lunch, useful when you’ve had enough of standing in museum rooms. Official locations.
Afternoon: Return to your hotel. St. Peter's Basilica has its own entrance and arrangements; it is not an automatic add-on to the museum route. If it is essential to you, reserve more of this day for the Vatican area and drop the hotel break, after checking access separately.
19:00 or later: Salumeria Roscioli. Reserve the restaurant at Via dei Giubbonari 21, rather than another Roscioli business. Order pasta and share something from the deli selection. Choose this for a dinner where the food is the main event. Katie Parla includes it in Eater's March 2026 Rome guide. The restaurant lists dinner from 19:00 and lunch from 12:30. Official contact and hours · Eater's Rome recommendations. Sleep in Rome, night three.
Day 4: Move to Florence
Morning: Train to Florence. Book Roma Termini to Firenze Santa Maria Novella on Italo or Trenitalia. The high-speed ride is roughly 90 minutes. Give the move the morning so you can reach your hotel and have lunch without a museum booking hanging over you.
Remaining afternoon: Piazza della Repubblica to the river. Walk toward Piazza della Signoria and the Ponte Vecchio, with time to stop. Treat this as orientation; tomorrow has a substantial museum visit. If travel runs late, shorten the walk.
Evening: Dinner near the hotel. If you’re staying in the Oltrarno, Pitti Gola below also works for tonight; move the day-six meal to somewhere else nearby. Sleep in Florence, night four.
Day 5: Uffizi and Sant'Ambrogio
09:00–12:30: Uffizi. Make Botticelli's Birth of Venus one of your deliberate stops. Despite its title, the scene shows Venus reaching land, with wind carrying her toward the figure holding a cloak. Follow the movement across the picture rather than trying to photograph it and leave. Use the current museum map; room assignments and displays can change. The museum's artwork explanation.
13:00: Cibrèo Trattoria. Walk east to Via de’ Macci 122r in Sant’Ambrogio. Get the pappa al pomodoro, a Tuscan tomato-and-bread soup, and consider the chicken-liver pâté with crostini. The current menu also has chicken-and-ricotta meatballs and a cheesecake with bitter-orange marmalade. It is a good lunch for exploring Tuscan cooking beyond steak. Lunch runs 12:30–14:30 daily.
Afternoon: Stay around Sant'Ambrogio, then take a break. Browse the streets rather than crossing back for a second museum. For a drink, Cibrèo Caffè at Via Andrea del Verrocchio 5R is a separate venue: its menu lists its own Negroni and alcohol-free choices. Check the café's service hours for the day. Caffè menu.
Evening: Leave dinner open. A long museum visit and lunch are enough commitments. Sleep in Florence, night five.
Day 6: Cathedral square and the Oltrarno
Morning: Decide whether you want to go inside. Begin around the cathedral and Baptistery. For this art-focused route, consider the Opera del Duomo Museum rather than assuming the dome climb is the only worthwhile ticket. Choose the relevant official pass and check its calendar before reserving. Do not add museum, dome and bell tower simply because a pass includes several places.
Lunch and afternoon: Cross to the Oltrarno. Reserve Enoteca Pitti Gola e Cantina at Piazza Pitti 16 for lunch on the other side of the river. The venue lists lunch from 12:00 to 15:00; choose the table time after settling the morning visit. Continue toward Piazza Santo Spirito afterward and browse at your own pace. Go for local cheeses and charcuterie with a wine recommendation from the team, or choose a tasting menu if you want lunch to last longer.
Evening: Your last Florence dinner. If you prefer to keep your last substantial meal for the evening, move Pitti Gola here; its listed dinner window is 19:00–22:30. Have a lighter lunch instead. Otherwise return to a place you enjoyed and keep the evening flexible. Sleep in Florence, night six.
Day 7: Leave Florence
Departure: Florence Peretola airport. From the central hotel area, use T2 from Alamanni–Stazione SMN toward Peretola Aeroporto. GEST advertises about 20 minutes for the city-airport ride; your walk to the stop comes on top. From AdAstra, or for an early flight, I’d compare a direct taxi with taking bags across to the tram.
Traveling with a large suitcase? Take a taxi. The tram’s luggage rules allow one bag up to 55 × 40 × 20 cm and 10 kg free. Larger bags require an extra ticket, and anything above 80 × 45 × 25 cm or 20 kg is prohibited. This route assumes FLR, not Pisa airport.
Hotels
Hotel Artemide, Rome
Best for travelers who want breakfast, a gym and an easy first evening at the hotel. Artemide, Via Nazionale 22, has the Ambrosia rooftop restaurant and bar, a small free 24-hour gym with Technogym equipment, and a lounge with a coffee station. Breakfast includes eggs and bacon alongside pastries, fruit, cheeses and cold cuts. This is the practical Rome choice if you want the hotel to handle some of the meals and downtime.
Via Nazionale is convenient for Termini and the Monti side of this route. It is a busy central street, so ask about room orientation if you want to face away from traffic. The Vatican morning still needs a separate journey.
Hotel Pendini, Florence
Best for a central base with breakfast before the museums. Pendini sits by Piazza della Repubblica, between the station side of the center and the walk toward the Uffizi. Its breakfast runs 07:30–10:00, with eggs, bacon, pastries and espresso or cappuccino served at the table. Choose it if you want to walk out into central Florence and start the day without finding a café.
The location is the draw. If you would rather spend a quiet afternoon at the accommodation, look at AdAstra instead.
AdAstra, Florence
Best for couples who want the stay itself to feel special. AdAstra has 16 individually decorated rooms in a family mansion on the Oltrarno side, with roll-top baths and a wraparound terrace overlooking the garden. Some rooms face the street, others the garden, so choose the category for the view you want. This is where I’d direct someone who wants to come back for a bath and a slower afternoon after the Uffizi.
You’ll cross the river for the Uffizi and cathedral. The garden view does not mean you have unrestricted access to the private garden. For the station and airport, a taxi is the simpler choice with luggage from this side of town.

Secrets
The Baptistery's original bronze doors are in the museum. If those are what you want to study, the Opera del Duomo Museum matters more than a quick photograph outside. The cathedral authority explains that the originals and other works once displayed at the Baptistery are now preserved in the museum. Use this detail to choose your day-six visit. Official collection context.
The standard Colosseum ticket includes more than the amphitheater. The official 24-hour listing also names the Roman Forum, Palatine and Imperial Fora, while excluding the arena. Check the actual product rather than buying another admission merely because a familiar name appears on a different booking page. This is a ticket-reading tip, not a promise of access to every special interior. Official ticket inclusions.
