What should you do in Rome in December 2026?
Go in the first half of December, from about the 1st to the 18th, and plan around four dates: free state museums on Sunday, December 6, the Vatican Museums closed on December 8, 25 and 26, everything ancient closed on Christmas Day, and short winter hours at the Colosseum. Early December has the lights and the nativity scenes without the Christmas week crowds, and every major site keeps its normal days.
Christmas week itself works if the reason for the trip is Christmas in Rome: Mass at St. Peter's, the nativity scenes in the churches and a long lunch on the 25th. It does not work as a first sightseeing trip, because the Vatican Museums lose two days in a row and the Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon and Capitoline Museums all close on the 25th.
What is open and closed in Rome in December 2026?
| Date | What changes |
|---|---|
| All month | Colosseum, Forum and Palatine: 8:30am to 4:30pm, last entry 3:30pm. St. Peter's Basilica: 7am to 7pm. |
| Sunday, December 6 | First Sunday: free Colosseum entry, tickets collected in person on the day, arena and underground closed. Also free at the Pantheon, Ostia Antica and the Borghese (booking fee still due). |
| Tuesday, December 8 | Immaculate Conception, a public holiday. Vatican Museums closed. |
| Thursday, December 24 | Capitoline Museums close at 2pm. |
| Friday, December 25 | Closed: Vatican Museums, Colosseum, Forum and Palatine, Pantheon, Capitoline Museums, Borghese and Ostia Antica. |
| Saturday, December 26 | St. Stephen's Day. Vatican Museums closed. |
| Sunday, December 27 | Last Sunday: Vatican Museums free, 9am to 2pm, last entry 12:30pm. |
| Thursday, December 31 | Capitoline Museums close at 2pm. |
| Friday, January 1, 2027 | Closed: Colosseum, Forum and Palatine, Pantheon, Borghese and the Vatican Museums. |
The Vatican Museums are also closed every Sunday except the last one, as in any month. The pope's December 2026 ceremonies were not yet on the Vatican's liturgical calendar on October 25, so the times below come from the Vatican once it posts them.
When should you see the Vatican Museums in December?
On a weekday morning in the first half of the month, and never in the week of December 21. The Vatican Museums open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm, with final entry at 6pm, and close on December 8, 25 and 26. With Sunday the 27th free and crowded, Christmas week leaves you December 21 to 24 and 28 to 30 at most, and that is when everyone else in Rome for the holidays is trying to get in.
December 27 is the last Sunday of the month and not one of the excluded dates, so the museums open free that morning from 9am to 2pm. I would not use it for a first visit: there is no timed free ticket, and the queue on the day after two closed days will be long. The Vatican Museums ticket guide covers which ticket to buy and when to book it.
How do you go to Christmas Mass at St. Peter's?
Request a ticket from the Prefecture of the Papal Household as soon as you know your dates. Tickets are free and the requests go through its online portal. The Prefecture's ticket page states that tickets are always free and links to the request portal, which handles requests for the pope's general audiences and liturgical celebrations. Anyone offering to sell you a ticket to a papal Mass is selling something that is free.
The Christmas Day blessing, Urbi et Orbi, is given from the basilica's central loggia to the crowd in St. Peter's Square. Be in the square well before it starts. The exact 2026 times for the Christmas Eve Mass, Christmas morning and the blessing will appear on the Vatican's December 2026 calendar; it was still empty on October 25.
If you do not get a Mass ticket, the basilica itself is open its normal 7am to 7pm on other December days. Go at 7am on a weekday to see the nativity and the square's tree before the crowds.
What happens in Rome on December 8?
December 8 is the feast of the Immaculate Conception, the start of the Christmas season in Rome, and the afternoon belongs to Piazza di Spagna. Each year the pope goes to the column of the Immaculate Conception by the Spanish Steps to pray and leave flowers; in 2025 he left the Vatican at 3:30pm. The square and Via dei Condotti fill hours ahead, so either be there early or stay away from the area that afternoon.
The Vatican Museums are closed that day, but the Colosseum, Pantheon, Capitoline Museums and Borghese keep their normal Tuesday hours. I would use the morning for the Colosseum and the afternoon for the Borghese, booked ahead, which is a short walk from the Spanish Steps through the Villa Borghese park.
Where are the best nativity scenes in Rome?
Start with Santa Maria Maggiore, which keeps the oldest one: a nativity group carved by Arnolfo di Cambio in 1291, on view all year. Turismo Roma lists it with the city's Christmas sights.
In December, St. Peter's Square adds its Christmas tree and a large nativity scene, and last year the 100 Presepi exhibition filled the space under Bernini's colonnade from December 8, 2025 to January 6, 2026. Its 2026 dates were not yet posted on October 25. Most churches set up their own presepe in the second half of December, so a walk through the center after dark on any evening from mid-month passes several of them, and the lights on Via dei Condotti and Via del Babuino and the trees in Piazza del Popolo and Piazza di Spagna.
Piazza Navona's Christmas market is the one everyone asks about. The City of Rome had not posted its 2026 dates when I checked on October 25. I would go for the walk and the square, not the stalls.
What should you book before a December trip?
Book in this order: the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Borghese, then dinner on December 24 and lunch on December 25.
- Vatican Museums, a weekday morning slot outside December 21 to 30. The ticket guide has the booking window.
- Colosseum, the first slot of the day, because winter last entry is 3:30pm. The Colosseum ticket guide covers which ticket includes the arena.
- Galleria Borghese. Every ticket needs a booking, 16 euros plus a 2 euro fee, and free-day tickets for December 6 go on sale 10 days before.
- Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas Day lunch. Christmas lunch is the meal Roman families go out for, so book both as soon as tables open.
- A papal Mass ticket, if that is the reason for the trip, through the Prefecture's portal.
The Rome booking order has the same list for any month.
What would I do with four days in Rome in December?
Four days, in the first half of the month, with ancient Rome early each day and the evenings for lights and churches. The dates below fit a trip from Thursday, December 3 to Sunday, December 6.
- Thursday: the Vatican. The museums at 8am, the Sistine Chapel before 11, St. Peter's after lunch. The Vatican day plan has the order.
- Friday: the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine on the 8:30am slot, lunch near Monti, then the Capitoline Museums until 7:30pm. After dark, walk down to Piazza Venezia and Via del Corso for the lights.
- Saturday: the Borghese and the center. A 9am Borghese slot, then down through the park to Piazza del Popolo, the Spanish Steps and the Pantheon, and Santa Maria Maggiore's nativity late in the afternoon.
- Sunday, December 6: Ostia Antica, free. No booking needed; leave by 10am because the site closes at 4:30pm. The Rome on a Sunday guide has the rest of the day.
For a longer stay, the three-day itinerary keeps the same order, and the where to stay guide picks a base in the center, which matters more in December, when the light is gone by 5pm and you will want to walk back to the hotel between the afternoon and dinner.
Is December a good time to visit Rome?
Yes, if you want the sites with fewer people and do not mind short days and some rain. December is cool, not cold, and the low season for the big sites in its first three weeks. Pack a warm coat and an umbrella, plan one indoor afternoon a day, and put the Colosseum and Forum, which have no cover, in the morning. The days are the real constraint: with the Colosseum's last entry at 3:30pm and dark by 5pm, a December day holds one major site and one museum, not three.
