7 Days in Puglia: Bari, the Itria Valley and Lecce

Sleep two nights in Bari, three in or near Monopoli, and two in Lecce. Spend the first two days on foot, pick up a car for the Itria Valley, and end with Baroque Lecce and one Salento choice. Day eight is departure. If flights allow, arrive in Bari and leave from Brindisi. Compare the one-way rental charge before assuming that route saves money.

Italy’s nine-day regional route reaches much farther. Seven days is enough for one coherent slice. I’d leave Matera and the Gargano for another trip.

• Monopoli or a masseria? Monopoli gives you the harbor and dinner on foot. A countryside masseria gives you a pool, quieter mornings and a car journey for every meal that is not on site.
• Coast or towns? Pick one proper beach day if the sea is central to the trip. Otherwise use the spare day for Cisternino, an olive-oil visit or a long lunch.
• Keep the car in Lecce? Keep it if Otranto is on your list. Return it when you reach Lecce if the last day is for the city and you are leaving from Brindisi.

Walk from the Murat district into Bari Vecchia and visit the Basilica di San Nicola. Buy a piece of warm focaccia from Panificio Fiore if you pass while it is coming out of the oven. Do not turn the old town into a checklist. Follow the lanes to the waterfront, then have a dinner built around orecchiette, fish or tiella barese. These are actual local dishes, not a generic “Italian food” evening.

See the Petruzzelli exterior and browse the Murat streets in the morning. Make lunch a panzerotto or a sit-down seafood meal according to your appetite. Spend the afternoon on the promenade and in whichever small museum or church interests you most. The point of the second Bari night is to enjoy the city rather than use it only as an airport stop.

If you want to leave town, Trani is the cleaner day-trip alternative to racing south and back through Monopoli, where you will sleep tomorrow.

Collect the car and drive south. Stop at Polignano a Mare for the cliff view and a short walk, then have lunch and the rest of the afternoon in Monopoli. The latter has a working harbor, old walls and enough streets to make a whole evening. Park outside the historic center; do not set your hotel entrance as the car-navigation destination unless the property confirms a legal route. At Don Ferrante, for example, the closest public parking is outside the walls.

Go to Alberobello in the morning and walk both the busy trulli streets and the quieter residential side. Leave before you feel obliged to buy a trullo-shaped souvenir. Have lunch in Locorotondo, then linger over its circular old town and white wine. Return to your base for a swim or an unplanned dinner. Do not add Ostuni to this day; it works better tomorrow.

Give Ostuni the first half of the day, walking uphill through the white lanes. At lunch choose Cisternino for a butcher-counter meal, or turn back toward the coast for seafood near Monopoli. Afterward choose one: an olive-oil visit, a beach, or the masseria pool you paid for. White-town fatigue is real. Two towns with a good lunch between them are more satisfying than four hurried stops.

Drive to Lecce, drop the car if your last day is urban, and enter the center on foot. Santa Croce, the Roman amphitheater area and the paper-mâché workshops give the afternoon structure without a timed ticket. Try a rustico as a snack and save dinner for ciceri e tria or another Salento dish. La Fiermontina has its own garden restaurant if you want the first night to be particularly easy.

Start with caffè leccese and a pasticciotto. Stay in Lecce for churches, courtyards, shops and a long lunch if the city is the reason you came. If the Adriatic matters more, keep the car and go to Otranto for its cathedral, walls and water. Choose the city or the coast, not both as a rushed final-day circuit. Gallipoli makes more sense on a longer Salento route.

Bari: JR Hotels Oriente Bari occupies an Art Nouveau building near the Petruzzelli, with a roof garden and easy walking access to the old town. It is a city hotel with some character, not a beach stay.

Monopoli: Don Ferrante is for people who want the sea wall, rooftop view and dinner inside the old town. It is the wrong choice if you need a car at the door. Choose a countryside masseria instead if pool time and olive-grove evenings outrank walking to restaurants; confirm on-site dinner days before booking.

Lecce: Palazzo De Noha is a smaller central stay with rooftop breakfast and a plunge pool. La Fiermontina is the bigger splurge for art, old stone, an olive-tree garden and a full pool.

In Bari, the order is focaccia while it is fresh, then seafood or tiella at a table. In Monopoli, Osteria San Giovanni is a traditional old-town option; Trattoria San Domenico is a fish-led alternative. Check their current hours directly before committing either to a specific night. In the Itria Valley, look for bombette and vegetables rather than a second generic pasta plate. In Lecce, breakfast is the caffè leccese and pasticciotto pairing; dinner can be ciceri e tria. Book the one meal that matters most and let the others follow where you actually are.

A car does little for Bari and much more for the Itria Valley. Old-town ZTLs and parking rules vary by town and hotel. Ask the property for its exact approved arrival route and parking instructions, then save those offline.
