Naples and Sorrento in Seven Days

Spend three nights in Naples and three in Sorrento. Use Naples for the archaeological museum, the historic centre and meals; visit Pompeii as a day trip with your luggage left at the hotel. Then move to Sorrento for two full days with time by the water and a smaller museum visit.

This trip leaves out Capri, an Amalfi Coast circuit and a Vesuvius climb. Adding all three would remove most of the time that makes the Sorrento stay worthwhile. If one is your main reason for coming, replace a full day rather than adding another stop.

Check your return flight before choosing the order. This sample ends in Sorrento and assumes a sufficiently late departure from Naples airport. Curreri advises boarding its airport bus at least five hours before the flight because road traffic can delay arrival. For an early flight, consider Sorrento first and Naples last if your arrival allows the onward transfer, or move the last night to Naples.

• Give Pompeii its own day. Visiting between Naples and Sorrento would turn the longest sightseeing day into a hotel-transfer day too.
• Choose the Naples museum day around Tuesday. MANN normally closes Tuesdays. Sansevero Chapel also normally closes Tuesdays, so one cannot automatically replace the other that day.
• Book Sansevero before committing the surrounding morning. Advance reservations are required; tickets open 60 days ahead, with another release two days before a visit.
• Pick the transfer for the month you are travelling. Campania Express is suspended from 1 October 2026 until further notice. Regular EAV rail and seasonal boats need their own checks. The suspension does not establish that the entire rail line is closed.
• Choose the Sorrento hotel for the stay you want. If swimming is central, verify actual water access, its operating season and its cost before booking. A sea-view room alone does not provide a beach holiday.

Day 1: Arrive in Naples

Check in and eat near the hotel. If you arrive early enough, take a short walk in the historic centre. Keep paid visits off the arrival day. Sleep in Naples.

Day 2: Archaeology and the historic centre

9am–noon: MANN. Start at the National Archaeological Museum. Check its separate open-gallery schedule before deciding which collections to prioritise. Museum-wide opening hours do not prove that every gallery is available.

Lunch: Da Michele, Via Cesare Sersale 1. Choose this for a proper pizza lunch before Sansevero. The Naples restaurant serves from 11am to 11pm daily and does not take reservations. Book the chapel for later in the afternoon so the pizza queue does not become the day's main source of stress. If you would rather stay closer to the chapel, have a lighter pastry stop at Scaturchio and save pizza for tomorrow evening.

Afternoon: Sansevero, if the available slot fits. If combining the museum and chapel feels too much, move Sansevero to the morning of day 4 and delay the Sorrento transfer. Do not squeeze both into one morning. If you want something sweet afterward, stop at Scaturchio’s historic shop, Piazza San Domenico Maggiore 19. Order a sfogliatella or ask for the Ministeriale, the house chocolate sweet featured on its website. Keep this a stop during the historic-centre afternoon, rather than another destination to travel across town for.

Dinner: pasta, potatoes and provola at Trattoria da Nennella, Piazza Carità 22. Go if you want an evening with singing and dancing around the tables. Put your name on the waiting list in person and return when the staff tell you; there are no reservations. The Naples location lists dinner Monday–Saturday, 6:45–11:30pm, and closes Sundays. If this day falls on Sunday, swap this dinner with Da Michele on day 3.

Optional cocktails: L’Antiquario, Via Vannella Gaetani 2. The 2026 50 Best write-up highlights Un Grande Limone, built around gin and several forms of citrus, and a trio of Negronis. Choose this if cocktails are part of the trip you want. It is near the waterfront, so make this your last stop rather than looping back to the historic centre. Day 3: Pompeii

Morning: travel to Pompeii and visit from opening. The park's official timetable lists a 9am opening. Allow roughly four hours for a selected route with breaks, rather than promising to see the entire site.

Buy through the ticket link on the park website and choose the ticket that actually covers the places on your route. Tickets are named and admission is capped. The visitor regulations describe uneven ancient surfaces; use the park's accessible-route information where needed.

Getting there: take the Napoli–Sorrento Circumvesuviana to Pompei Villa dei Misteri. The park's official directions pair that station with Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra. Pompei Santuario is a different stop, serving the amphitheatre side. Choose your entrance before choosing the train. Return on a Naples-bound service after the visit.

Lunch: keep it inside your Pompeii visit. Bring a sandwich if you want to spend the time on the ruins; use the designated picnic areas on the official park map. This is the day's practical meal. Save your sit-down meal for Naples.

Late afternoon: hotel break. Keep Vesuvius and Herculaneum off this day.

Dinner: Da Michele, Via Cesare Sersale 1. This is the historic Naples address, occupied since 1930. The restaurant lists daily service from 11am to 11pm and takes no reservations. If you ate here yesterday, make tonight your Nennella dinner instead. Sleep in Naples.

Day 4: Move to Sorrento

Have breakfast before the journey. If you moved Sansevero here, take an afternoon departure for Sorrento.

Transfer: choose one checked service. Alilauro publishes departures from Napoli Beverello to Sorrento, but the current displayed timetable covers only 15 June–15 September 2026. Do not reuse those departures for another season. A boat plan also needs a way from the hotel to the correct port and from the arrival port to the Sorrento hotel.

By train: take the EAV Napoli–Sorrento line from Napoli Porta Nolana or Napoli Piazza Garibaldi to Sorrento. The operator's timetable directory links the current schedule. The March 2026 timetable gives roughly 70–80 minutes for many regular services from Garibaldi, before travel to and from the stations. Use a taxi from the Naples hotel if you do not want the cross-town walk with luggage. This is the land alternative when the boat does not suit your date.

After check-in: get to know central Sorrento. For a coffee stop, try D’Anton, Piazza Sant’Antonino 3/4. It doubles as a design shop: the cup, sofa and chandelier can all be bought, so the room changes as pieces sell. For dinner, use L’Antica Trattoria below if you want to book a terrace table for your first evening. Sleep in Sorrento.

Day 5: Correale and Marina Grande

Morning: Museo Correale. The museum's August 2026 notice lists Tuesday–Saturday from 9:30am and Sunday from 9am, with Monday closed. Allow time for the collections and grounds; use this as a smaller cultural visit after the scale of Pompeii.

Lunch and afternoon: Bagni Delfino, Via Marina Grande 216. The terrace sits directly over the water, which is the reason to make this your long lunch. The Gargiulo family has run it since 1968. Call +39 081 878 2038 for a lunch table on your date; the restaurant's site does not publish a current menu, so choose from the day's offering rather than arriving attached to a dish from an old review. Spend the afternoon around Marina Grande afterward.

Return to the hotel for a break. Sleep in Sorrento.

Day 6: Time in Sorrento, or one planned meal out

Keep the morning for the water if you have arranged suitable seasonal access, or for the town if you have not. There is no compulsory ferry excursion.

For travellers who want a destination meal, Don Alfonso 1890 in Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi is an optional replacement for the evening in town. Its restaurant lists an April–October season, Wednesday–Sunday dinners and Friday–Sunday lunches. It is not central Sorrento: book the table and both transfers together. Its stated child policy welcomes children over six, so this is not an automatic family recommendation.

For a dinner in central Sorrento, choose L’Antica Trattoria, Via Padre Reginaldo Giuliani 33. It gives you a booked dinner without the trip to Sant’Agata. The vine-covered terrace is the draw if you want an evening outdoors; request that setting rather than assuming every table is outside. Its published dinner service starts at 6:45pm daily during its operating season. Check your date and the current menu when reserving: the website still labels its menu spring 2026 and notes a winter closure. Choose it for a longer sit-down meal. Sleep in Sorrento, unless the flight plan requires moving to Naples tonight.

Day 7: Depart

Breakfast, checkout and the previously chosen airport transfer. Do not schedule a final attraction. Use the operator's current departure guidance and your airline's requirements; do not calculate airport arrival from an advertised driving time alone.

Hotel Piazza Bellini: for spending most of your Naples stay on foot. Via Santa Maria di Costantinopoli 101 puts you in the historic centre, with MANN and the chapel on this side of town. The private courtyard is the reason to choose it over a room-only stay: breakfast can be eaten outside, and the Buvette bar gives you somewhere to return for a drink. Breakfast runs 7:30–10:30am, with mozzarella, ricotta, sfogliatelle and espresso alongside the usual sweet and savoury buffet. This suits the city half of the trip, when you will be out most of the day.

Bellevue Syrene: for making the hotel part of your Sorrento holiday. At Piazza della Vittoria 5, the appeal is time by the sea rather than another packed sightseeing day. Guest access to its private bathing area, with loungers and umbrellas, is included, as is the Club Lounge's sweet and savoury snacks, wine and soft drinks before lunch and dinner. That makes the quieter sixth day purposeful: you have somewhere you actually want to spend it. The bathing area is a separate facility, so confirm its operating dates before choosing this hotel for swimming.

Free museum admission can mean fewer galleries. MANN's current ticket page says the Egyptian collection, Secret Cabinet and Magna Graecia section close on free-admission days. Check this if one of those collections is your reason for visiting.

Visit Correale in the morning. An older summer press release advertises late openings, while the newer English notice gives earlier closing times. The morning plan avoids relying on the conflicting evening information.
