"answer": "Hakone or Nikko? Go to Hakone if you have a night to give it, and Nikko if you have a day. Hakone, the hot-spring town in the mountains southwest of Tokyo, is about the inn: a room with its own bath, dinner served in it, and the lake and ropeway the next morning. Nikko, the shrine town north of Tokyo, is about Toshogu, the carved and gilded shrine complex of the first Tokugawa shogun, and it fits in a day from Asakusa.",

Nikko, the shrine town north of Tokyo, is about Toshogu, the carved and gilded shrine complex of the first Tokugawa shogun, and it fits in a day from Asakusa.\nIf you can only choose one and you are going in November, I'd pick Hakone. Its leaves peak in early to mid-November around Gora and Owakudani and run into early December lower down, while in Nikko the high lake country is past its peak by late October and the road up to it is jammed through mid-November."

"text": "On the rail operators' and official tourism pages, checked October 30, 2026\n| Hakone | Nikko\nFastest direct train | Odakyu Romancecar, Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto, about 80 minutes | Tobu limited express, Asakusa to Tobu-Nikko, about 1 hour 50 minutes\nOne way, no pass | 2,470 yen (1,270 yen fare plus 1,200 yen Romancecar fee) | Not posted as text by Tobu; buy at the station or with the pass\nThe pass | Hakone Freepass, 2 days from Shinjuku, 7,100 yen; 8,300 yen with the Romancecar one way, 9,500 yen with it both ways | NIKKO PASS, shrine area 3,000 yen for 1 to 2 days, all areas 8,000 yen for 1 to 4 days; limited express extra\nThe main sight | The loop: mountain train, cable car, ropeway and the Lake Ashi boat | Toshogu, 1,600 yen, 9am to 4pm from November to March\nAutumn leaves | Lake Ashi late October to mid-November; Gora and Owakudani early to mid-November; Hakone-Yumoto late November to early December | The lake area late September to late October; central Nikko late October to mid-November\nDay or night | Overnight | Day trip, unless you want the lake\nBoth have a Japan Rail Pass route too. For Nikko, the Visit Nikko page describes the bullet train to Utsunomiya and the JR Nikko Line, which costs more than Tobu but is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass."

"heading": "Why is Hakone the overnight?",
"text": "Because the loop takes a day by itself, and the reason to go is the evening at the inn. The 2-day Hakone Freepass covers the round trip from Shinjuku to Odawara, the mountain train, the cable car, the ropeway, the Lake Ashi boat and designated buses; the Romancecar fee is extra. The ropeway alone is about 30 minutes each way between Sounzan and Togendai.\nCheck the Hakone navigation site before you go: on October 30, 2026 it posted a notice of replacement buses on sections of the ropeway during scheduled maintenance. The Freepass itself showed normal operation.\nFor the inn and the room, the one night in Hakone guide picks two ryokan, Japanese inns with meals served in the room, and the room type to book at each."

"text": "Take the first SPACIA X from Asakusa, which leaves at 7:50am and reaches Tobu-Nikko at 9:39am, and give the morning to Toshogu. From November 1 the shrine is open 9am to 4pm, and entry closes 30 minutes before, so an arrival after lunch leaves too little time. The 1,600 yen ticket includes the Sleeping Cat carving, the inner shrine and the Crying Dragon hall.\nKeep the day to the shrines in town. Kegon Falls, 97 meters high, is 40 minutes by bus from the stations toward Lake Chuzenji, and in leaf season the Visit Nikko page warns that the drive from Nikko Station to the lake, normally 45 minutes, can take over 4 hours from mid-October to mid-November. It recommends staying overnight up there instead. If the lake is the point, make Nikko the overnight; otherwise leave it for another trip."

"text": "• Autumn, early to mid-November: Hakone, for the leaves around Gora and Owakudani and an inn to come back to. Central Nikko is also in color, but the traffic on the road to the lake decides it.\n• Late November to early December: Hakone, where the lower town around Hakone-Yumoto colors last.\n• Late September to late October: Nikko, with a night by Lake Chuzenji, when the high country is at its peak.\n• The rest of the year: by the kind of day you want. A bath and dinner at the inn means Hakone; a day of shrines and carving means Nikko.\nFuji views from Hakone depend on the weather, so do not choose it for Fuji alone."

The five-day Tokyo itinerary shows where a day out fits, and where to stay in Tokyo picks a base near the right station: Shinjuku for Hakone, the east side of the city for Asakusa and Nikko."
