Golden Week is the run of spring public holidays when much of Japan travels at once, and the trains, hotels and sights fill with domestic travelers.\nIf you are already committed to those dates, the plan is simple: be in one city for May 1 to 5 rather than moving between cities. The worst days to ride the bullet train are the first and last days of the long block, May 1 out of Tokyo and May 5 back into it."

      "text": "2027 holidays from the Cabinet Office, checked October 29, 2026\nDate | Day | What it is\nApril 29 | Thursday | Showa Day, a public holiday\nApril 30 | Friday | Working day\nMay 1 and 2 | Saturday and Sunday | Weekend; the long block starts\nMay 3 | Monday | Constitution Memorial Day\nMay 4 | Tuesday | Greenery Day\nMay 5 | Wednesday | Children's Day; the last holiday\nMay 6 | Thursday | Working day; crowds thin out\nFor comparison, 2026 added a substitute holiday on May 6 because May 3 fell on a Sunday. The 2027 list has no substitute day in May."

      "heading": "What should you book now for Golden Week 2027?",
      "text": "The bullet train seats for any move on May 1 to 5, and a hotel you can cancel, now.\n• Shinkansen. On smartEX, Tokaido line reservations open at 5:30am Japan time a year before the travel day, so May 2027 seats are on sale already. The train and seat are confirmed after 2pm one month before. During peak periods JR Central makes every Nozomi seat reserved: no unreserved cars, and travelers without a seat stand in the aisles. The slower Hikari and Kodama keep unreserved cars, and JR Central warns they can be overcrowded. It has not posted its 2027 peak dates yet.\n• Kyoto hotel. Kyoto fills before Tokyo. Book a refundable room now, and budget for the lodging tax of ¥1,000 a person a night on rooms from ¥20,000 to ¥50,000.\n• Ghibli Museum. Tickets go on sale at 10am Japan time on the 10th of the month before, so May tickets are released on April 10. Holiday dates sell first; be online at release."

      "heading": "What closes or gets crowded in Golden Week?",
      "text": "Little closes, and nearly everything is busier. Golden Week is a holiday for workers, not for museums and temples, which stay open and see their busiest days of spring.\n• Monday rules shift. Many Tokyo and Kyoto sights close on Mondays but open when Monday is a holiday and close on the next weekday instead. The Tokyo National Museum works that way, and so does the Kyoto Imperial Palace. With May 3 to 5 all holidays in 2027, check each calendar for Thursday May 6.\n• Kyoto temples are fullest from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Go at opening time.\n• Restaurants in the busiest areas take bookings early for the holidays. Book dinners when you book the hotel.\n• Expressways and airports peak on the first and last days, so do not plan a domestic flight on May 1 or May 5."

    {
      "id": "where",
      "heading": "Is Tokyo or Kyoto better during Golden Week?",
      "text": "Tokyo. It is large enough to absorb the holiday crowds, and many residents leave the city for the week. Kyoto takes visitors from the whole country into a small center, and its narrow lanes and buses feel it more.\nThe order I would use: Kyoto first, the train to Tokyo on Wednesday April 28, Tokyo through May 5, and leave Japan from Tokyo. That moves you between the two cities on a working day and keeps you in one place for the holidays. If you land after the holidays, reverse it and go to Kyoto on May 6."

    {
      "id": "plan",
      "heading": "What does a good Golden Week plan look like?",
      "text": "• Stay put. One city for May 1 to 5, one hotel, no train moves.\n• Start early. The first two hours after opening are the calm ones at the big sights.\n• Book timed entries. Anything with a timed ticket is easier than a sight with a walk-up line.\n• Leave Thursday May 6 for the move. The trains empty fast once the holidays end.\nThe seven-day Tokyo and Kyoto itinerary shows the order of a week across both cities, and the Japan Rail Pass or single tickets guide decides how to pay for the trains. For the Tokyo days, the where to stay in Tokyo guide picks the area, and the Japan booking order lists what sells out first."
